Kiruna

Kiruna - Northernmost Swedish town

Kiruna is the Northernmost town in Sweden, situated in the province of Lapland. Many of our Winter Swedish destinations use Kiruna as a main transport hub. It is close to the ICEHOTEL and has approx. 20000 inhabitants. As you can see in the google map, it is also a mining town.

The area in which the city was built shares a long history with the indigenous Sami people dating back at least 6,000 years of evident settlement. The city of Kiruna was founded in 1900 and quickly became an important seat for iron ore extraction and mining industry in Sweden. During World War II, large quantities of iron were transported from Kiruna by rail to the east coast, and further down to be sold to Germany.

Kiruna has a lovely old church which is one of Sweden's largest wooden buildings. The church exterior is built in a Gothic Revival style, while the altar is in Art Nouveau. It is very simple but beautiful to visit to visit. We also suggest that you visit the tourist information centre as they have a great model of the mines and how the closing of Kiruna is going to affect the town.
