Havila is a family owned Norwegian shipping company that will sail the classic coastal voyage between Bergen and Kirkenes with the Norwegian coast most environmentally friendly ships from January 2021. Four new ships will be doing the Kystruten Norwegian Coastal Route (Bergen to Kirkenes and return), running on alternate days to Hurtigruten.
The four new ships will be loaded with the world's largest battery pack, and for four hours, they will sail without noise or emissions through vulnerable fjords. The batteries are charged with clean hydropower at shore, and when the batteries are low, they will switch to natural gas which cuts CO2 by around 25%. The hull is specially designed for maximum energy efficiency, and excess heat from cooling water and sea used for heating on board.
On the menu, there will be locally made dishes from local producers, and all unnecessary plastic will be avoided. Havila are already exceeding the authorities requirements for cutting emission, and they will be setting sail with zero emissions as the target.
The Havila Voyages is part of the Havila group that dates back to the 1950s. It all started when the founder, Per Sævik, bought his first fishing boat in his teens. From fishing and herring fishing, Havila is now a group operating in shipping technology, offshore, transportation and tourism.
In 2021, the ‘Havila Capella’, ‘Havila Castor’, ‘Havila Polaris’ and ‘Havila Pollux’ will be ready to deliver unforgettable and comfortable voyages for their passengers. All the ships will be identical: 122.7 metres long, 22 metres wide and able to carry 640 passengers.
